TWO DOUBLE-BILL PERFORMANCES FOR THE NOTTING HILL MAYFEST
Tuesday 31st May and Wednesday 1st of June
7.30pm

The Enchanted Child and The Medium

Following our hit (and) run at the Edinburgh Fringe and triumphant transfer to St John's,
Smith Square, we continue to indulge our passion to share opera with a
new audience. At this year's Notting Hill Mayfest we present a bewitching evening
devoted to the supernatural, Opera Gets Spooked, comprising of two well-loved works.

The Enchanted Child

The company's production of The Enchanted Child (hailed as 'a work of genius' by the
founder of the Edinburgh Fringe) presents an adolescent tornado, obsessed with
independence, make-up and boys, flung into a series of surreal hallucinations. Updating
the classic opera The child and the spells by Ravel and Colette, this is a powerful story of
the tensions between adolescence and romance, self-discovery and reconciliation,
growing up and letting go of childhood.

After an argument with mum and a tantrum in which she destroys her bedroom, the
heroine's temper gives way to a paranoid fantasy in which her toys, storybooks and even
the wallpaper come to life. Seeing how much hurt she has caused, rejected and scorned
by everyone important to her, she is forced to consider what (or who) she really wants.

The Medium

In Menotti's 100th year Open Door Opera present The Medium, the story of Madame
Flora's fake séances and the fright she gets when one of them produces real contact with
the Other Side.

As her daughter Monica's relationship with her adopted son Toby develops beyond the
platonic, Mme Flora tries in vain to convince her clients – and herself – that she is a fraud.
One of the composer's most popular pieces, The Medium has never lost its power to
thrill... or chill.

Auditions: The Medium

Open Door Opera announce auditions for the part of TOBY in our new production of Menotti's The Medium.

Performance dates: May 31, June 1, Notting Hill Mayfest

Audition dates: Friday 11 March, Barons Court
Recalls: Friday 18 March

TOBY is the mute adopted child of Madame Flora. Rescued from the streets of Budapest, he now assists Mme Flora in the mechanism of her "séances", and is a companion to Monica, her daughter. As his relationship with Monica develops, Toby plays a pivotal, tragic role in Mme Flora's demise.

A unique opportunity for a young actor with a strong stage presence (playing age 15-19).

The opera is an hour long and will be presented alongside the company's reprise of Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges ('The Enchanted Child').

ah, happy jünglings!

On December 13, we welcomed our first guests to the Castle of Santa Giuda in the Swiss alps... temporarily relocated in the beautiful Garry Weston library of Southwark Cathedral. The butler and the maid managed some "quality time" in between serving the mince pies and preparing to say goodbye forever; the girls drafted the perfect love letter, only to have it torn to pieces by the enraged Contessa; and poor Mario spent the entire evening waiting outside in the snow, as beautiful music (and some not-so-beautiful folk dancing) echoed around the courtyards. This time, at least, there seemed to be a happy ending, but will things work out so neatly again?

To see the weird and wonderful "Evening with Opera" unfold in a room near you, send us an email at opendooropera@gmail.com - all we need is a room to transform - we will do the rest!

13th December - An Evening With Opera at Southwark Cathedral

You are cordially invited to an evening of musical magic and hilarity. It is Christmas Eve in the Italian Alps and a large number of unexpected guests have arrived at the castle - how will the domestic staff cope, when they already have domestic troubles of their own?  Will the Contessa stop meddling in other peoples' affairs long enough to sing her favourite folksong? Will her daughter's suitor make it through the snow, or will romance be confined to the telephone? Can they all rely on an improbable happy ending?

Open Door Opera will be transforming the beautiful library of Southwark Cathedral into a cosy salon where you will be treated to mince pies, drinks and beautiful music: extracts from the most celebrated operas, from Handel to Mozart to Johann Strauss, sung by talented young singers direct from the Edinburgh Festival and St John's, Smith Square. A perfect introduction to the beauty and drama of opera, or a seasonal reminder of your favourite arias, duets and ensembles.
